The Castle

Well here it is! The overview!

The Castle! I have thought about a few different things when building this massive thing!

You can find the rationale attached below!

Basically, I wanted something big, something imposing and something that could withstand a siege for a while. I’ve focused on the 13th Century Welsh style of castle.

When discussing my process in a castle forum, I copped some criticism for having a keep shaped like a gatehouse (also called a barbican). Admittedly, this is not a well-known shape for a keep, considering some of the most famous keeps, such as Dover Castle’s Keep and The White Tower from the Tower of London, are square keeps. The iconic square keep is almost synonymous with the term castle. However, the castles built by Edward the First in his conquest of Wales repeated a “Horseshoe” or “D-Shaped” design and more frequently the nobility lived in these barbicans as they were the strongest parts of the castle.

The criticism was; the barbican design served no purpose, but I disagree. In the unlikely case that an army makes their way through all the defences to the keep, this D-shape will protect the front entrance to the keep far better than a square building.
