Ok so I’m embarking on a journey of castle design and I’m inviting you all to come with me as I map out every foot of a castle, from its overview map, to its gatehouse, defensive walls, towers, workshops, stockyards, chapel… everything!
I’m planning to design the overview map first, and so far my chicken scratch drawing (attached) shows the basic outline of the defensive structures and chapel.
Every building will be mapped at the 5ft battle map scale and I’m hoping that by involving everyone in the process, we can all have some fun with it.
I’m also going to hold some competitions for names of various parts of the castle and, of course, the name of the entire complex as well. There will be different levels of input for all our financial patrons, but also for our followers and well wishers too!
I spent a LOT of time castle hopping in England and Europe and the attached picture shows just how much reference material I’m sifting through to make sure everything is just right.
So far I’m drawing heavily on Edinburgh and Bamburgh castles, using the idea of a spiral defensive design. After that comes the inner bailey and I’m looking at a Beaumaris-Harlec style interior, the final design being in the air.
I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments on each stage as I upload my progress. I expect this will take some time and it won’t be the only project I’m working on, so I’m in this for the long haul.
